IN-BETWEEN SPACE is never silent, never passive, never just in-between. How do we fill in what is left open?

1m3 is an in-between space par excellence: people stumble upon, walk by or stop at the temporary exhibition in the corridor of KASK. Vitrines encourage by-passers to reflect on collections. In architecture, open spaces fuse the realms of reality and imagination. In literature, they influence readers and their interpretation. In-between spaces are to be filled in, deliberately stay vacant, and broaden meaning-making horizons. We ponder, we wonder, we decide – we select letters, we choose words, and we generate meaning. Our own unique cognitive processes lead to our own unique ways of interpreting. How do you interpret these in-between spaces?

With UM... YEAH... IN-BETWEEN SPACE, we explore a notion at the intersection of our own disciplines – architecture and literature – and invite the viewer to reflect on their own meaning-making. The displayed Artists’ Books from the Kunstenbibliotheek unfold from theoretical reflections into typographical representations of open spaces, as well as reflect our internal processes of interpretation. Take a look at the website to see how we interpreted the selection, and how these books leave room for thought
